My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.

I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think “Well, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot more” so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that “10” is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said “6” because I thought “Well, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.”

bomberqueen17

I searched and searched for the post this graphic was from, and the OP deactivated, but I kept the graphic, because my BFF does the same thing, uses her imagination to come up with the worst pain she can imagine and pegs her “10″ there, and so is like, well, I’m conscious, so this must be a 5, and then the doctors don’t take her seriously. (And she then does things like driving herself to the hospital while in the process of giving birth. Probably should have called an ambulance for that one!)

So I found this and sent it to her. Because this is what they want to know: how badly is this pain affecting you? Not on a scale of “nothing” to “how I’d imagine it’d feel if bears were eating my still-living guts while I was on fire”.

I hate reposting stuff, but I’ll never find that post again and OP is deactivated, so, here’s a repost. I can delete this later, i just wanted to get it to you and I can’t embed images in a chat or an ask.

This is possibly why it took several weeks to diagnose my fractured spine.

0 - I have no pain.

It’s also really important to get this kind of scale to people who have chronic pain, because chronic pain drastically lowers your perception of how “bad” any kind of pain actually is, and yet something like this pain scale is extremely user friendly.

For example, if someone asked me how much pain I’m in at any given time, I’d say hardly any, and yet I’m apparently at a chronic 2.5, and it only goes up from there depending on the day.

There’s also a similarly useful “Fatigue Scale”

Mental Health Pain Scale transcription:

MILD

1 - Everything is a-okay! There is absolutely nothing wrong. You’re probably cuddling a fluffy kitten right now. Enjoy!

2 - You’re a bit frustrated or disappointed, but you’re easily distracted and cheered up with a little effort.

3 - Things are bothering you, but you’re coping. You might be overtired or hungry. The emotional equivalent of a headache.

MODERATE

4 - Today is a bad day (or a few bad days). You still have the skills to get through it, but be gentle with yourself. Use self-care strategies.

5 - Your mental health is starting to impact on your everyday life. Easy things are becoming difficult. You should talk to your doctor.

6 - You can’t do things the way you usually do them due to your mental health. Impulsive and compulsive thoughts may be hard to cope with.

SEVERE

7 - You’re avoiding things that make you more distressed, but that will make it worse. You should definitely seek help. This is serious.

8 - You can’t hide your struggles any more. You may have issues sleeping, eating, having fun, socialising, and work/study. Your mental health is affecting almost all parts of your life.

9 - You’re at a critical point. You aren’t functioning any more. You need urgent help. You may be a risk to yourself or others if left untreated.

10 - The worst mental and emotional distress possible. You can no longer care for yourself. You can’t imagine things getting any worse. Contact a crisis line immediately.

you can get clear plastic rubber spacers to put in your piercings if youre worried about them closing. stage makeup is made to be completely opaque and sweat proof consider using this for covering up tattoos, concealer is not opaque enough. leave your id and wallet at home, bring a change pouch for cash. write important numbers on your arms and legs. dont just turn your location off turn your whole phone off with the battery and sim card out, only turn it on unless you need too (if you have an iphone keep it at home and get a contact/safety buddy). pin your house keys, change pouch or anything small and important on the inside of your pants or the inside of pockets to prevent losses during physical altercations. double up on socks they become pockets, and are great if you cant leave your debit/credit card at home.

to truly protect you identity you need to cover your hair, get dark sunglasses, a mask that covers around your face, a bandana and the masks we us to stop covid frm spreading show too much skin, which is really important for black and brown folks to cover, all black gloves, black shirt/jacket and pants. tuck your pants legs into your shoes or socks to help prevent them getting caught on things or pulled off.

skip oil based lotions and hair care products bc tear gas binds to oils, it also binds to many other things like clothes so dressing in layers or having backup clothes in a black backpack help, also keep plastic bags incase u need to change out of your gassed clothes and dont wanna keep them in your bag.

stay safe! stay organizing!

Be careful about where you write a phone number. Fox News zoomed in on a protester’s arm one time so that their viewers could call and harass the emergency contact person

Local Bookstores Have A New Weapon In The Fight With Amazon

ebookporn

image

In the book industry, Amazon is Goliath, the giant who overshadows everyone else. But there’s a new David on the scene, Bookshop.org.

It doesn’t expect to topple the giant, but it has launched a weapon that could make Amazon’s shadow a little smaller, and help local bookstores fight back.

Bookshop.org, a website that went live at the end of January and is still in beta mode, is designed to be an alternative to Amazon, and to generate income for independent bookstores. And, perhaps more importantly, it seeks to give book reviewers, bloggers and publications who rely on affiliate income from “Buy now” links to Amazon a different option.

Profit from books sold through Bookshop will be split three ways, with 10% of the sale price going into a pool that will be divided among participating bookstores, 10% going to the publication that triggered the sale by linking to Bookshop.org, and 10% going to Bookshop.org to support its operations.

y’all, Bookshop is amazing. i got an email about them from my local indie store, and they’re so excited about it. please oh please use this place instead of Amazon!!

with every purchase, they tell you how much you’re putting toward independent booksellers, which is fun and cute:

image

it’s also amazing for authors! i’ve been asked a couple times about the best way to support my books. this site is now the answer. it reports sales figures to the NYT and Bookscan, a type of tracking that helps authors hit bestseller lists. and even better, authors can set up affiliate pages, and if you buy through those pages, we get an additional 10 percent of each sale on top of royalties. this is a massive deal!!!

for reference, many royalty rates are in the 6-8 percent range. so if you buy through Bookshop author affiliate pages, authors get more than twice as much from sales of their books, with no additional cost to you.

the site is still in beta, but it also has a fun interface where you can make book lists for favorites or recommendations, sort of like goodreads (except better, because goodreads is owned by amazon).

this is my Bookshop page. if you ever buy one of my books, i pray u will do it from this site! (or from your local indie :D)

Independent bookseller here. We fucking love Bookshop right now. They’ve increased the percentage we get from sales through affiliate links during the COVID-19 crisis, which is a really big deal for the stores that can’t or don’t run their own online shops – which, with most stores shut down, is a lot. Even those of us trying to operate remotely could really use the extra boost.

Plus you can get both eBooks and DRM-free audiobooks through Bookshop, too! They’re powered by Hummingbird (the American Bookseller Association’s new e-reader program) and Libro-dot-FM (for legal, ethical, DRM-free aubiobooks.)

Thinking of getting into the wedding industry where I offer my services to brides with overbearing families and my job will be to remind everyone else it is NOT their wedding. I can do passive aggressive, private aside with a vaguely threatening air, or just telling them to shut the fuck up in front of everyone.

The plan is you tell them I'm your fiance's estranged step sister so they'll even sympathize with you for being stuck with me instead of hate you when I tell them no one wants to hear about why they rudely disagree with your veil choice.

god it just that. percy was 14 when annabeth got kidnapped, and i would never forget how percy stood in cabin 3 while talking to his mom that had a date with paul at the moment and asking her what should he do, because no one seems to care about annabeth. all they care about is artmeis. and i'll never forget how sally jackson didn't even question it when she told him that he should go, that he should go and search for her. that she knows that if the things would've been difference, annabeth would've done it for him. and i can't stop thinking about how 2 years later he just got missing, and i can't stop thinking about how annabeth cried herself to sleep every night because percy, her percy, crossed all of the usa to bring her home and i think a lot about how she hated herself because she couldn't bring him home like he brought her home 2 years ago. and i think about him kissing her again in camp jupiter, and tells her that she's the only person he remembered, and i think about how - a year earlier - he didn't remember who he was, he fell down to the river and annabeth held his hand and i think about how percy could've seen any other person while he went inside the river styx, but he saw her and he remembered her, and i think a lot about what if annabeth is his achilles curse, but not his loyalty. and maybe it is his loyalty, but his loyalty to her and only her.

I know more about economics than AOC and my knowledge on economics is on a high school level. Its actually embarassing how little she knows about this shit.
But hey, expecting a socialist to know about economics is like expecting a fish to know what a desert is.

You know what? Let’s use the allowance example again to make it even clearer.

Let’s pretend we have an allowance tax bracket with a 70% tax on money received after a certain point. To keep things simple, we’ll make the limit $90.

If a kid does chores and earns $10 in allowance, they get $10. They’re not going to be affected by the 70% tax.

If a kid does chores and earns $50, they get $50. They also aren’t in the 70% tax bracket, even though they make five times as much money as the kid making $10.

If a kid does chores and earns $100 in allowance, then they’re in the allowance tax bracket with the 70% tax.

$100 minus $90 is $10. This is the part that’s going to be taxed 70%.

70% of $10 is $7.

So the kid getting $100 in allowance will have $93 after the 70% tax takes its share.

Now, I’d never impose such a thing on actual kids. All of this is a thought exercise.

But if it were real, the kid making $10 and the kid making $50 would probably be kind of mad if the kid getting $93 was bitching about being short $7.

You know what sucks? Despite being on this site for almost a year now, I have never seen one positivity post about LGBTQ+ people that are muslim, and I think that’s really bad, so I’m making my own.

Muslim sapphics who wear hijabs / niqabs / burqas? Y’all are absolutely amazing and beautiful.

Muslim people who like multiple genders? Stunning and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Don’t even get me started on muslim trans and nonbinary people, oh my god you guys are so incredible and so freaking valid.

Your religion does not contradict your identity, I am so proud of all of you
